What is Generative AI — really?
There's a lot of noise around Generative AI. The term gets used to describe everything from a chatbot answering customer service emails to systems that can write code, generate images, draft legal contracts, or summarise a 200-page report in seconds.
So let's cut through the noise with a simple definition: Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that creates new content — text, images, code, audio, video — by learning patterns from large amounts of existing data.
The key word is "generates." Unlike traditional software that follows fixed rules, or even classical machine learning that predicts or classifies, GenAI produces something new each time. It doesn't retrieve stored answers — it constructs them.
A search engine finds information that already exists. A recommendation algorithm predicts what you'll like. A generative AI model creates something that didn't exist before — a draft, a summary, a piece of code — based on what it has learned from billions of examples.
The models behind this — like GPT-4, Claude, or Gemini — are called Large Language Models (LLMs). They're trained on vast amounts of text from the internet, books, and other sources, and they've developed a remarkable ability to understand context, follow instructions, and generate coherent, useful outputs.

Whatever you put into a GenAI prompt may be used for model training (depending on the provider and settings). Never input confidential client data, personal data, or proprietary information without checking the data processing terms.
GenAI outputs can sound authoritative and polished even when they're mediocre. Without domain expertise, it's hard to spot what's wrong. The human reviewer is not optional — it's the entire quality control system.

- Never skip the review. Develop the habit of treating every GenAI output as a draft that needs your expertise to finalise.
- Share what works with your team. GenAI adoption compounds when knowledge spreads — the team that learns together accelerates together.
